Internet travelers use search engines because they are looking for specific information. If you use keywords that you know people are likely to search for and insert them just for the purpose of gaining traffic, and no content for that keyword exists ... you are likely to get people angry. With any business or personal site you are presenting yourself to your visitors. Do you want your first impression to be that of dishonesty?
Please see Meta Tags for information on designing your site to be search engine friendly. Remember that your title, keywords, and descriptions must match the content of your site, and in particular the opening paragraph of your page..
This page will focus on not so much learning about the search engines but rather on being a resource for webmasters. For various search engines you can add your url, see who is linked to you, and check the effectiveness of your keywords. You will find Search Boxes for several search engines/directories on one convenient page.
TIP: Use an update reminder service on your links page. If you request that those providing links sign up for your reminder service then they will be able to keep their links alive and updated without you having to search and notify each individual site if your site is relocated or moved.
