Officially, HTML may only include characters specified in ISO-8859-1, aka US-ASCII, aka Latin-1. To ensure consistent display of HTML documents on any platform, the use of other characters is discouraged. When you choose to use characters within your site design check here for the numeric character or alphanumeric entity references. This will provide the best usability within various browsers.
As always, test your pages under various browser and platforms.
